Mother Tree

from CA$35.00

This magnificent Western Redcedar old growth tree stands on Meares Island, Situated in the heart of Clayoquot Sound, just off the coast of Tofino, BC.

The fact that it still stands here today after 1200+ years is a testament to the successful protection of the island by the Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht First Nations peoples, who filed proceedings to prevent logging of Meares, basing their argument on aboriginal ownership of the Island.

The event marked a significant step forward for indigenous rights and environmental movements in Canada.

Walking among the giant trees on this island is like a walk through time - our human lives are so short in comparison. We are visitors on this land, who get the privilege to experience its beauty and awe. We must strive to leave this place better than we found it, like those of the Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht First Nations peoples did.

I, and many generations before and after me, are so thankful and inspired by their dedication and commitment towards environmental preservation.
